Dick Moonlight is dead for real this time. Thanks to a trio of Obama-masked thugs in a dark downtown Albany alley, he’s purchased a one-way ticket to the Pearly Gates—that is, until he feels his floating spirit painfully pulled back into his bruised but breathing body. And that’s when the real trouble starts.

A private detective with a short-term memory problem due to a wayward self-inflicted slug, Moonlight knows he’s still in danger. Now he just needs to know why. And he’s got plenty of enemies to keep him guessing—the Albany police, the local mob, even the latest love of his life, Lola, can’t be trusted. Only his Vietnam-vet best friend, Georgie, is on the level. But it seems the goons who tried to take him out have bigger fish to fry—chiefly Moonlight’s latest client, Peter Czech, a handicapped nuclear engineer with a mysterious Russian heritage. Czech had something—a box—the gang believes is now in Moonlight’s possession, and they’re willing to get it any deadly way they can. Problem is, Moonlight doesn’t recall Czech giving him any box—of course, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have it. He just better figure out where it is before he winds up dead for the last time.

The Cold War is heating up once again in Vincent Zandri’s latest thriller. Moonlight Rises is a fast-paced, whip- smart tale of a guy who can’t always remember getting into trouble—and can’t seem to stay out of it.

There is no sugar coating it, this was simply a terrible book.

The characters are almost beyond description and they are not believable. The plot is equally preposterous. The main character, Dick Moonlight, has had one too many head injuries where one more head injury could cause him to stroke out but that doesn't stop Dick. As a result of his continuing head traumas Dick Moonlight continues to experience numerous "back from the dead experiences "including one where he saw his girl friend cheating on him. Aside from the near death experience, he is tortured and threatened in the hospital. So Dick and his dope smoking, Vietnam vet, ex pathologist buddy set off to solve the case. Along the way, there are more back from the dead experiences, more head trauma for Dick, not enough dope for his buddy, multitude of evil Russians, a cheating girlfriend, along with her nefarious sister, are becoming more villainous, experimental surgery being performed in a warehouse while the FBI and Albany police department search for Dick Moonlight's client who may be guilty of treason.

Not only is the plot ludicrous, the writing is equally juvenile and hard to follow. Between simplistic first person narrative, banal dialogue, all interlaced with continual out of body experiences and completely insulting sexual comments and images, it is just too hard to follow, too hard try to wade through and it is simply not worth the effort.

Vincent Zandri has written some excellent suspense novels in the past, however this book is far from the standards of some of his other works. I have not only deleted it from my ereader but have deleted it from my Amazon collection. I just don't want to be reminded that I wasted money on that book.

Not my cup of tears, a wordy, confusing, afternoon soap style where several words are used when two or three would suffice.

The plot is long, confusing at times appears not to have been edited, especially with matters having to do with firearms. (Pistols do not use "clips" they use "magazines").

Too long, too sugar sweet, needs lots of work before submitted to films.
From the moment I started reading I knew that he had his hooks in me, yet again. I was drawn to this book and everytime I started to read I had to force myself to put it away or I wouldn't get any sleep. Another fabulous installment in the Moonlight Series and I can't wait for the next. Every book I read by Vincent Zandri always leaves you longing for more.
First what I didn't like to be continued. The Dick Moonlight book was a good read, had interesting characters and continuing series of action events. Almost like Parker, almost.
Not a bad read. Not sure I like the 40's detective story kind of writing but the story itself is good. Does need another run through by an editor to catch a few errors. Would read another Moonlight book.
For those of us that have read Mr. Zandri's other books, I think the one is more about the complete story, than waiting for the ending. It's like watching a movie that you don't dare blink, or you will miss something important. Well done Mr Zandri! What a way to keep us guessing. Liked it very much, and would recommend. His books have yet to disappoint.
Zandri has a gift of writing that keeps you turning the pages and wanting to know what happens next. Characters that carry you on the journey till the last word. A story that makes you hope it doesn't end so you can read more.
Dick Moonlight is dead. He was beaten to death in a dark alley by thugs wearing President Obama masks that spoke only using voice synthesizers. What were they looking for? A box that nobody knows anything about and they want him to stay away from his newest client a handicapped nuclear engineer by the name of Peter Czech.

You'd think Moonlight's problems would be over but during his out of body experience in the hospital, he sees his true love, Lola hugging up on some young guy. Now he wants answers and he wants them bad enough to come back from the dead to get them.

If you haven't read the first book, Moonlight Falls or the short story, Moonlight Mafia, you will not get the whole scope of what Dick Moonlight has been through. Vincent Zandri kinda recaps it in this book but I feel you should read them all. You'll get the inside jokes and exactly how much Hell he's been through.

Just when you think Dick's life couldn't get any worse, it does and it almost costs him his life. The ultimate heroic underdog comes back with a vengeance and once again Vincent Zandri takes us on a ride with more twists than a curly straw. I read this book in one day actually, a few hours. I had to finish 50 pages of Moonlight Falls, all of Moonlight Mafia and then I thought I would START this one. Instead, I devoured it and absolutely did not want to put it down. The only time I've ever read 300 pages like that was with Jeffery Deaver's novels. I definitely found myself lost in Dick's unfortunate adventure which he once again drags his friend George into. At times you feel really bad for him and at times you want to laugh at the absurdity of it all. Just makes you wonder what kind of trouble Vincent is going to have him get into next. I want to be one of the first in line for the next book and until then I'm going to read more of Zandri's work!

Thank you to Partner's In Crime Blog Tours and Vincent Zandri for the review copy. It in no way influenced my review.
